Very happy that Jazzwise Magazine has announced the album launch through featuring our collaborative video with film makers Anna Maguire and Emily Bailey on their Video of the Day series. The film can watched via the link, with further info about the collaborative process on the YouTube page.
A few weeks to go until Polar Waters is released and awesome to have been played by Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio 6. The album’s opening track Swimming in Winter was aired for the first time and either side of us were She Can’t Love You by Chemise and Tiya Mowa by Bokani Dyer.
Neil Spencer’s detailed review of Polar Waters was published in The Observer over the weekend and is available to read in full on The Guardian website via the link. Very happy for the album to be getting this kind of exposure in the UK’s most dedicated newspaper for culture.
Landfill, the third and final pre-release single from our upcoming album Polar Waters is now available to stream. This is a through composed piece, featuring solos from Andrej on trombone and myself on alto.
Swirl and Gather, the second pre-release single from our upcoming album Polar Waters is now available to stream. The music develops through an extended improvisation with Anna Serierse on vocals and myself on alto and the composition is inspired by Claire Cox’s poem Seasick.
Deception Island, the first pre-release from our upcoming album Polar Waters is now available to stream. Johannes Mann and Marc Doffey are featured soloists and it’s awesome to be able to share the first part of this project.
The composition is inspired by Catherine Fauld’s poem Deception Island, whose travels to the antarctic and arctic have informed her work.
Since the beginning of the year I have been preparing to play Escapades – John Williams’s alto saxophone concerto – with the Deutsche Filmorchester Babelsberg. This has been a long-term ambition and it was great fun last week recording the first movement in the magnificent Babelsberger Film Studio.
In just under a month’s time my octet will be doing a small series of concerts in the UK.
The band features a really eclectic mix of musicians from the German, Dutch and UK jazz scenes, and I’m really looking forward to presenting this project for the first time in Manchester, Nottingham, Oxford and London.
